The Berkeley Stamp & Engraving Co. began its journey in 1929. Originally run out of
a home garage on Josephine street in Berkeley under the name Ellis Rubber
Stamps, the company was founded by H.R. Ellis and his son Walter "Wally" Ellis.
Nearly two decades later the business moved to its current location, 1680 University
Avenue, in Berkeley.
A few things have changed since this move. During the 70's two nephews of Wally
decided to work at the company. The idea was that they would want to take over
when Wally retired. It soon became obvious that they would have to wait much
longer than they anticipated. They both went off to start their own stamp shops, one
being the popular Albany Rubber Stamp Co. on Solano Avenue.
It was there that the current owner and manager learned their rubber stamp
manufacturing skills. Brandon Netz and Cynthia Spiller worked for their father,
Ronald Netz, the owner of Albany Rubber Stamp Co., while growing up. Eventually
they went away to school.
During this time, Ron passed away. In 1992 Albany Rubber Stamp merged with
Ellis Rubber Stamps and became Berkeley Stamp maintaining the Berkeley
location. 10 years went buy, and you guessed it, Wally decided to retire at the young
age of 90.
This happened to be the same time Brandon was graduating from UC Santa
Barbara, and the stage was set forth for Brandon and Cyndy to begin a new chapter
for the company. Although the looks have changed and services have been added,
the principles, knowledge, and dedication remain the same.
